Thanks and Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone who helped out for a great Earth Day celebration!  It went well, and we definitely got some organic goodies into the bellies of non-believers and the uninitiated.  I think I explained what "organic" meant more than a few times!

Also, congratulations to Victoria Mesa who is the new STELS VP, and thanks to everyone who voted.  I am honored and excited to be the new STELS President, but we'll miss Meredith, our Queen.  Please keep in mind that the positions of Treasurer, Secretary, Webmaster, and Policy Chair are up for grabs in the Fall.  We have lots to do, and need all the collaboration we can muster.

Good luck on exams, thanks for all your help this semester, and remember that Victoria and I will be around during the Summer.  Please congratulate Meredith on her graduation, and  also for landing that plum job as the new associate for the #1 distributor of the clubs used on adorable baby fur seals.

Study well!

Clean Energy

I wanted to put this on the blog so everyone could be aware about the future of nuclear energy and the answer to all the world's energy problems. The construction for this fusion plant is scheduled to begin now ("beginning of 2008") in Cadarache, France. You can learn a lot about it from this website. www.iter.org

Fellow STELS,

Looking for interesting and informative video clips to watch during your next study break? Check out the links below:

Modeling the Future, a talk with STEPHEN H. SCHNEIDER, a climatologist, and Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University. He is internationally recognized as one of the world's leading experts in atmospheric research and its implications for environment and society. He is author of Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can't Afford to Lose.

Al Gore presents updates to his film Inconvenient Truth in this brand-new slideshow (posted April 2008)! In this presentation, he offers additional evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

Also, for those who care to join me for the film screening of the 11th Hour this comming Tuesday (EARTH DAY 2008), feel free to email me opradhan@stu.edu to arrange a carpool. I have at least two extra tickets ($5/ea). The show starts at 6pm. Watch the film's trailer:

Elections

Can we have one official election blog which lists the candidates for each position.

Please Vote for Covi for STELS President!

Dear STELS,
We should be proud!  We're a strong group, and have done a lot in our first year of "resurgence."
We can do a lot more.  Currently, I'm working on a number of projects to really green our campus, and Meredith and I learned a lot at the Greening the University Conference at STU on 4/4.  If elected, here are a few flexible initiatives we can work on to make immediate changes here at STU:
1.  Implement a "GO Green" pledge, signed by new students at Orientation.
2.  Organize and execute donation and installation of low-flow, aerated faucets (save up to 5 gallons per minute!) in each and every law school bathroom.
3.  Go Green Week, informing law students about ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
4.  Design and distribute reusable STELS grocery and lunch bags to students, staff, and faculty.
5.  RECYCLE ON CAMPUS!  I'm currently working with Physical Plant and the Grant and Research Office to accomplish this seemingly Herculean task by the Fall.
6.  Design, fabrication, and installation of "The Eternal Life of a Styrofoam Cup."  This is my Summer plan.  It will be like an art exhibit, but informative!
7.  Eliminate or at least cut down on the use of styrofoam and paper towels on campus.
8.  Help the organic, wholesale local food coop on campus, Flavors of Nature, THRIVE!  It exists, and it's awesome!

These are just a few of my ideas.  We'll call them the "Green 8."  If we can accomplish these few tasks, we can really help to reduce the impact the student body makes on the environment.  I would really enjoy guiding STELS in the new year.  I've enjoyed being VP, and have learned a lot in the past year.  We need to make a change from "Environmental Law," to "Earth Jurisprudence."  We need to present a new face to students, and make being green the norm. On a personal note, I work well with the faculty and administration, as well as with others, and I enjoy making a difference.  Plus, we NEED TO!  We need to effect change immediately!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at ccampbell@stu.edu.  Thanks!  Covi

Victoria Mesa for STELS VP!

Hi everyone!
We have come so far from that first meeting back in October to create STELS. I am so proud of all that we have accomplished. I will like to serve as your new VP and continue working on behalf of the environment and earth jurisprudence. I think there are so many issues that we can address and act in our positions as law students and I will like to take on that challenge at share it with all of you. I want to continue supporting the efforts by Covi of finally bringing recycling to campus; bring well-respected environmental speakers to come to campus and raise the interest for Environmental Law and Earth Jurisprudence, but overall, I will like to continue the legacy fo our dear friend Meredith who brought us on this path! I hope I can count on your vote! Meredith... I am going to miss you so much! Thanks!
V.

Gigi Wolf-Blanco for STELS VP!

Covi should run for Prez!

I am strongly interested in running for STELS VP and would be honored to get your vote. I believe that, as a team, we can make this organization even more successful by bringing in an FL Bar Certified Admiralty/Maritime seminar to STU. Participating students (and attorneys) would be able to obtain a Maritime Certificate, granted by the Florida Bar. I have already been in contact with Prof. Costabel regarding the possibilities. He is all for it! I believe Tulane is the only other law school that does this. The seminar would not only place STU more prominently on the map, but the organizations as well!

Please vote for me as STELS VP.

In the spirit of being green STELS will be having our Executive Board Elections on-line.  I am sad to be leaving this semester because I feel as though STELS is just getting started and has so much to do around campus and the South Florida Community.  That being said we must move on with a new Executive Board.  We will need a new President.  I am suggesting Covi run for the position which would leave the position of Vice President vacant.  Therefore, we will need to fill that position as well.  If you are interested in either of these positions please Post your interest along with a brief summary of what you can offer and the direction you see STELS going in next year.

Please make your post by 5:00pm on Thursday April 17.
All votes should be sent to stels.mail@gmail no later than 5:00pm on Friday.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know.  Have a great day!
