General Meeting and Upcoming Elections for the Spring 2009 Semester

Dear STELS Members,
Welcome!
Congratulations to our new members for making it through their first semester!  Next week, STELS will be holding elections to fill the positions that will be left empty (sniff) after December Graduation.  Thanks to our outgoing VP, Victoria Mesa, and both of our Treasurers (because 2 is better than 1) Nathan Kennedy and David Hollander, for their service.
Brief campaign writings may be posted on the site, and voting will be done electronically, with Victoria and Covi counting the votes.  The winning officers' names will be announced here, as well.  Please look for an invitation to join the blog.  Coming soon!
In the meantime, enjoy your day, and hopefully we'll see you all at tomorrow's meeting:  Thursday 11/13/08, 5 p.m., Room 2-1.
Food will be served.  Movie "The 11th Hour" to follow.
Thanks!

Thanks and Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone who helped out for a great Earth Day celebration!  It went well, and we definitely got some organic goodies into the bellies of non-believers and the uninitiated.  I think I explained what "organic" meant more than a few times!

Also, congratulations to Victoria Mesa who is the new STELS VP, and thanks to everyone who voted.  I am honored and excited to be the new STELS President, but we'll miss Meredith, our Queen.  Please keep in mind that the positions of Treasurer, Secretary, Webmaster, and Policy Chair are up for grabs in the Fall.  We have lots to do, and need all the collaboration we can muster.

Good luck on exams, thanks for all your help this semester, and remember that Victoria and I will be around during the Summer.  Please congratulate Meredith on her graduation, and  also for landing that plum job as the new associate for the #1 distributor of the clubs used on adorable baby fur seals.

Study well!

Clean Energy

I wanted to put this on the blog so everyone could be aware about the future of nuclear energy and the answer to all the world's energy problems. The construction for this fusion plant is scheduled to begin now ("beginning of 2008") in Cadarache, France. You can learn a lot about it from this website. www.iter.org

Fellow STELS,

Looking for interesting and informative video clips to watch during your next study break? Check out the links below:

Modeling the Future, a talk with STEPHEN H. SCHNEIDER, a climatologist, and Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University. He is internationally recognized as one of the world's leading experts in atmospheric research and its implications for environment and society. He is author of Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can't Afford to Lose.

Al Gore presents updates to his film Inconvenient Truth in this brand-new slideshow (posted April 2008)! In this presentation, he offers additional evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.
